Lower engine protection for Austin Healey BN1-BJ8
This aluminium sump guard fits Austin Healey BN1-BJ8 models and helps protect the lower engine and undercarriage from road knocks, bumps and debris. Designed by A H Panels and manufactured in the UK, it is made from 1/4 inch 5083 marine-grade aluminium for strength, sensible weight and strong corrosion resistance.
Practical protection without unnecessary weight
- Helps shield the sump and lower undercarriage from knocks, bumps and road debris.
- Made from 1/4 inch aluminium plate for a strong protective barrier beneath the engine area.
- Marine-grade 5000 series aluminium offers strong corrosion resistance, including resistance in saltwater-type environments.
- Purpose-made for Big Healey BN1-BJ8 models rather than adapted from a universal guard.
- Supplied with the required fixings for installation.
- Made exclusively by A H Panels for A H Spares.

What is supplied with the sump guard?
- Aluminium sump guard
- Mounting brackets
- Required fixings
The mounting brackets are designed to be attached to the outside of the chassis rails and require welding during installation.
1/4 inch marine-grade aluminium construction
The guard is manufactured from 1/4 inch thick 5083 marine-grade aluminium plate, chosen for its strong balance of strength, sensible weight and corrosion resistance. That makes it well suited to an underbody protection part exposed to moisture, road dirt and contaminants.
The aluminium construction gives meaningful protection while avoiding the extra weight normally associated with a heavier steel guard.
Welded brackets for a secure, long-term fit
The supplied brackets are welded to the outside of the chassis rails, giving the sump guard the secure mounting needed to do its job properly. For owners without welding equipment or chassis repair experience, this is best handled by a competent welder or restoration workshop familiar with Austin Healey chassis work.
Although this adds a proper fitting step, it also avoids relying on improvised clamp-on fixings beneath the car. Once installed correctly, the guard provides a strong protective barrier for the lower engine area and undercarriage.
- Inspect the chassis rails before installation, especially on older repairs or restored cars.
- Position the guard carefully before welding the brackets permanently.
- Check safe clearance around the sump, steering, exhaust and any non-standard underbody components.
- Protect surrounding painted, trimmed or fuel-related areas before welding.
- Recheck all fixings after initial road use.
No fluid changes, brake proportioning valve adjustments, bedding-in procedure, wheel clearance setup or hub-specific checks apply to this part.
Useful protection for road-driven Big Healeys
The sump and lower engine area are among the more exposed parts of a Big Healey, particularly on uneven roads, steep entrances, ferry ramps, paddock surfaces and loose road debris. This aluminium sump guard adds a strong protective barrier beneath the car, helping reduce the risk of underbody knocks reaching more expensive components.
It is not a substitute for careful driving, correct ride height or sound suspension setup, but it gives worthwhile added protection for BN1-BJ8 cars used regularly on real roads.
